My friend trained Aikido, and I've trained Karate. We talked and exchanged ideas.
While Karate is about striking swiftly, strongly and technically, preferably defeating enemy with single strike... or overcoming him/her with strongly developed technique and body/mind fitness, Aikido uses mostly Atemi, knowledge and practice of human anatomy... mostly with throws and joint locks. It's focus is on self-defence, it's not meant to be used to attack someone. Originally, Aikido is very spiritual too.
One interresting thing my friend told me, was that there was a woman who sat on floor and two strong men could not lift her from her sitting position. She used their strength against them using her experience with Aikido Techniques.
Why this is so important?
Buddhist Meditation is mostly practiced in sitting position.
Refusing to be lifted from that sit is kind of message sent: 'You cannot stop me from meditating, no matter how strong you are'.
